The long-awaited remake of the Nintendo 3DS game that spawned a franchise of life and hometown has finally made its way to the west. I’ve had this game pre-ordered for a couple months so I’m glad that it’s finally arrived.

Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal is a 2018 Japanese Action/Musou-style video game from Tamsoft and Marvelous. It is a remake of the director’s cut version of Senran Kagura Skirting Shadows known as Senran Kagura Burst on the Nintendo 3DS. This remake takes the story and characters from the original release and combines it with the current style of gameplay that the franchise is currently known for since the Versus spin-off titles (Shinovi Versus and Estival Versus).
The game was released for the PlayStation 4 in Japan followed by a PlayStation 4 and Steam release for North America and Europe. Now I will get straight to the point with regards to the western release – due to Sony’s recent changes in their policy they have decided to tone down multiple Japanese games due to their fanservice content and as a result the PlayStation 4 version for Burst Re:Newal will not include the Intimacy Mode.
The Senran Kagura license continues to be distributed by both Marvelous Europe for Europe and XSEED for North America. XSEED has two separate collector’s edition releases while Marvelous Europe has one big collector’s edition which replicates the Japanese release. I went for the Marvelous Europe release, which is known as the Bountiful Beauties edition.
The Bountiful Beauties edition contains the game in physical form, the original soundtrack in a DVD case, booklet, and 6 keychains all housed in a box. It’s worth noting that the booklet features artwork for both Skirting Shadows and Burst depending on which side you check. There are also some downloadable codes which include being able to play as Yumi, introduced in Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus and eventually Japan’s favourite waifu from the franchise, plus 2 additional costumes, a pose, and a Soundtrack App.
